His Story
Sergeant Cornell Houston was a soldier with the 10th Mountain Division who was gravely wounded during the Battle of Mogadishu. He was evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he died of his wounds — making him the 19th hero of the battle. From Mobile, Alabama, Houston was 31 years old. His Bronze Star with Valor Device and de Fleury Medal honor his service and sacrifice. Cornell Houston's memorial at Queenslake represents all those who fought and survived the battle only to succumb to their wounds — a reminder that the cost of war is not always counted on the battlefield.
